“From Eureka I went to Arcata. Just back of the village were many redwood stumps of immense size. Twenty or thirty years earlier the whole country around must have been covered with a glorious redwood forest.”
Jeremiah Curtain passed through the area around 1888, recovering Native lore. Ben Schill guided me to his writings, this link will get you to the second of his chapters where he is in northern California.
Thanks, as always, ‘River, for sharing another a great source of info.
Hope all is well with you.
That was a very nice and interesting link above, olmanriver. I read it in its fascinating entirety and hadn’t seen it before. Thank you.
Related to this topic, there’s a nice, small book on Sequoia Park and its history by Dione Armand that can be found at the Sequoia Park Zoo gift shop for $10 (the lowest price for this book is surprisingly there– and this benefits the zoo as well).
Some interesting pictures for both the Sequoia Park and surrounding Eureka can be found here for you to see.
Be forewarned, you might spend several minutes seeing these rarely published pictures, one after another, scrolling down and seemingly transported to a different time in Eureka’s history.
And thank you Skippy! I really enjoyed taking the photo tour of the park and environs.
Speaking of cool links, I found a link to an article titled ‘Crannell Giant Was Larger Than General Sherman’ about some giant redwoods that I had never heard about.
That was some tree, olmanriver. I’ve never heard of this one before. This is an amazing find and a nice link to it, too. I wish this awe-inspiring tree was still standing, it was truly one of a kind; the only one.
Thank you.
