Old Eureka Courthouse-From beautiful to, well, not so

Old Eureka Courthouse

Old Eureka Courthouse

According to a random timeline of Eureka I just found on the internet, this grand old building was destroyed in an 1954 earthquake.

And we went from that, to this:

Eureka Courthouse and Jail, present day

Eureka Courthouse and Jail, present day

Please don’t misunderstand.   I think this is actually a gorgeous photo of a very ugly building… more a hodgepodge of four buildings all kinda mashed together, actually.

One can’t help but notice the different “feel” of the old building .  And I can’t help but wonder if  the character of Eureka would be different if this historic structure was still standing today.

It probably would have been demolished in the 70’s anyway to make way for “progress.”

    Sound familiar?

No kidding. The only fortunate thing about the poverty in Humboldt is that not a lot of old structures were demonlished to make way for new construction… People just couldn’t afford it. And as a result, we now have such a great area filled with historic architecture. Let’s hear it for poverty 🙂

And could you tell me again please, how is it that Lucy bacame blind?

My guess is syphillis . It was rampant among native americans, especially women, once the white men came in and started raping them.
I also read somewhere that infants exposed to syphillis have frequent bloody noses (like Preston describes of Charles), which also makes it fit.

Who knows, though. There were many other diseases that may have caused it….
