Hath no frind or relations livinge

I’ve written much about the indenture of Native Americans (click the “Indenture” category on the right) during the settlement period of California, but indenture was far from a new idea.  Many of our ancestors likely came to American as indentured servants because they lacked the funds to pay for passage.  Through the system of indenture, a person could have their passage, food, etc. paid for in exchange for their labor over a period of years.  According to wikipedia, over half of all white emigrants that arrived in the English colonies of North America during the 17th and 18th centuries may have come as indentured servants.

The other night I explored the virtual Jamestown website and discovered a database that contained information about over 10,000 indentured servants that came to America in the seventeen and eighteen hundreds.

Many of the women were  “spinsters” and many of the boys were under twenty years of age–a majority of the younger travelers were orphaned though some had parents in prison.

Most contracts were marked, rather than signed, indicating that the travelers were illiterate.

I’ve pulled a few that I thought were especially interesting for one reason or another…

  1. My ancestor came to America as an indentured person back in the coloney days. He paid of his indenture and went on to become wealthy.

    I don’t think that the Indian people had any period to pay off ther servitude. Do you know???

      Hi Ernie,
      Well…. in theory the indenture of native americans was finite, depending on the age and gender of the person being indentured… let me find the law… in 1850, the law allowed folks to keep indian boys until they reached 18 and girls 15 years of age… natives arrested for vagrancy couldn’t be held more than four months…
      IN 1860, the law got much stricter. “Prisoners of War” and others could be kept much longer:
      Such children as are under fourteen years of age, if males, until they attain the age of twenty-five years; if females, until they attain the age of twenty-one years; such as are over fourteen and under twenty years of age, if males, until they attain the age of thirty years; if females, until they attain the age of twenty-five years; and such Indians as may over the age of twenty years, then next following the date of such indentures, for and during the term of ten years, at the discretion of such Judge;

      Though I think the law was repealed in 1866….
