What happened to the town of Essex?

Ok, so now I seem to be hooked on posting again, if only temporarily.

Is this Essex (Hwy 299 between Arcata and Blue Lake)? Looks like the right topography and I think that train trestle is still there. And so, if this is Essex, what the heck happened to it? I don’t know that any evidence of the town remains…

Maybe Essex (County of Humboldt Collection)

  1. I would like to know because i drive the Essex exit to my boys’ house from Arcata! If i were home i would check my Turner’s “Place Names of Humboldt County.” I bet he has something about it. Do you have a copy of the book?

I do and just looked it up.
I don’t have the updated edition but in this one Turner says Essex was originally the location of John Vance’s lumber mill and town-at one point containing over 15 company owned houses and a post office. Doesn’t say why it all disappeared. Flood maybe?

any chance there is a date with the photo?

It is funny as this comment (these links) were initially tagged as spam but are instead very great links to other Essex photos.
      Thanks Mark !!!
      Enjoy everyone…

These are great links! Thank you so much.
HSU is such a great resource for historic photos. Easy to get lost just plugging in local landmarks/communities and seeing what comes up.

Pages 17-21 describe flooding that might have been the cause: http://www.humboldtgov.org/DocumentCenter/Home/View/389
